The captain has just switched off the seatbelt sign, and I am officially on my way to India.

For those readers who do not know, I will be travelling to Jamkhed, a small town in Maharashtra state, approximately nine hours drive east of Mumbai. Together with a group of students from the University of Melbourne I will spend three weeks at Jamkhed’s Comprehensive Rural Health Project (CRHP) learning about primary health care and rural development through observing and interacting with the village health workers and the community.

I must admit that I am feeling quite nervous, but I am hoping that when I step off the plane in Mumbai the excitement will set in. I suppose my nerves are attributable to a fear of the unknown. Honestly, this is the first time I have really travelled out of my comfort zone and I have no idea what to expect. I am visiting a new country, with a group of people who I do not know, living in an environment very different from the one I am used to. I hope that I will be able to keep an open mind so that I can really make the most of this opportunity. I want this experience to be a positive one which will help me grow both academically and personally.

But before travelling to Jamkhed and beginning my three weeks in rural India, I will spend a few days exploring the city of Mumbai. It’s time for me to wrap this up as I am about to be served the first of what I’m sure will be too many curries.
